People need cars
to keep dry in the rain.
To carry an umbrella
is old-fashioned and plain.
And people need cars
who otherwise would complain
walking here to the Quickie Mart
would be such a pain.
And people don't like
to drive with the bus.
Why can't the passengers
just drive cars like us?
Why can't they afford
a big SUV plus
forty dollars a day
to gas the thing up?
And outside the car,
they can't hear the radio play
the same songs repeated
nine times a day!
And traffic reports
that never can say
why the street that you're on
has such a delay.
I suppose there are people
whose commutes aren't as far
as the average distance
between Earth and Mars.
Some people don't have pity
for those without cars --
Some people are happy
to live and work where they are.
But here in America
the American Dream
is to drive your big car
on a big road at top speed.
To pay for wars over oil,
to pay for wars over greed.
To pave the whole planet
for all the roads people need.
